ohhhh, backup! right!

our hard drive died. we took it to the shop to see if it could be resuscitated and if any data could be retrieved from it, but no. it has died and taken everything that was on it to hard drive heaven. and of course, there is no recent backup. sigh. there were years of pictures on that hard drive. family vacations, celebrations, performances. sigh. oh well, time to make new memories. and back them up.

Jackie,
I'm sorry to hear about the photos -- Hopefully you can get into a new habit of backing up for those new memories!

Please, please tell me you did not throw the drive away. There is an easy solution to most of these problems, because there's most frequently a simple cause to them. You simply "knock" the drive, sharply, with your knuckles, several times. This is not enough of a shock to damage the drive, but is enough to shake loose whatever particle has become suck, or to dislodge the drive heads if they are stuck in a 'parked' position.

They recovered 99% of the data off of the Shuttle Columbia's drives, and they burned up coming down to earth with exploding rubble! There is hope, unless you've tossed the drive, of course.
